A Kota at Tamié
We are a French-American family living on our dairy farm in the mountains of Savoie. Nicolas’ parents, Sophie and Jacques, arrived from Paris and began farming at Tamié in 1984. Since the beginning, most the of the milk has been sold to the nearby Abbaye de Tamié, where it is transformed into their well-known and loved cheese. In 2009, Nicolas returned to join his parents on the farm. They took the opportunity to begin making ice cream with part of the milk from their 40 dairy cows, thus creating Glaces & Cows. Hilary joined the adventure in 2011, leaving her home in California to settle in Savoie. In 2014, we (Nicolas and Hilary) had the opportunity to buy a house next to the farm and turn it into a farmstay rental. Ever since, we have been enjoying hosting guests from around the world. This year, we invested in a small chapel, also next to the farm. We are completely renovating it and by Christmas, it will be open to travellers wishing to spend the night in a unique 19th century monument.
Today, we would love to improve upon the farmstay experience by offering our guests a chance to share a meal, while at the same time celebrating all that the local farms have to offer (which is plenty in this area!). To do this, we would like to set up a kota (a Finnish BBQ hut) where our guests can share and enjoy a meal together, year-round. What better than a good BBQ and scoop of ice cream after a visit of the farm?!
We continue to sell the majority of our milk production to the monks of Tamié, where they transform into into the Tamié cheese. We keep about 10% of our milk production, which we turn into ice cream. Our ice creams and sorbets are sold in a number of stores, mostly farm cooperatives and local produce shops, as well as a few restaurants, throughout Savoie and Haute Savoie. For the holidays, we also offer vacherin cakes (meringue, ice cream, sorbet and whipped cream).

It has been nearly four years since our farmstay rental, Maison Glaces & Cows, first opened and we continue to enjoy welcoming travelers from around the world. Starting this Christmas, we will open our new farmstay rental, Chapel on the Farm, in which we are currently completing renovations. The kota is the last piece of the puzzle for a full farmstay or visit experience!

How will the money be used?
The money raised will be use to buy and furnish a kota. The kota will have four uses:
It will be available to guests of our two farmstay rentals, Maison Glaces & Cows and Chapel on the Farm, at no extra cost. We can also provide the meal
It will be available for rent for groups who would like to share a meal in the kota, but without staying the night. We can also provide the meal.
It will be used for ice cream tastings during tours of the farm, through Mon beau terroir or privately.
It will be used as a pedagogic space and for ice cream tastings when hosting school groups.
We hope to purchase a 9m² kota, which fits up to 12 people, from the company Kotagrill. For 6,000€, we could get the standard kota grill made of spruce, 3 double-paned windows (one opens), a door with a lock, 5 benches (two with extensions), cushions, a round table and a scandinavian grill. We would assemble the kota ourselves and would spend at least 3,000€ to complete th purchase and associated work.
If we surpass our goal, we would like to buy a larger and better equiped kota!
